- Electric Heat Pump: Delivers efficient heating and cooling for most of the year, even operating at over 100% efficiency under certain conditions.
- High-Efficiency Gas Furnace: Provides dependable heat during extremely cold weather.
Rebate Details
FortisBC offers the following rebates to support your upgrade:
- Base Rebate: Up to $10,000 for installing a dual-fuel system meeting specific efficiency standards:
- SEER ≥ 16; HSPF (Region IV) ≥ 10.00, or
- SEER2 ≥ 15.20; HSPF2 (Region IV) ≥ 8.50
- Minimum capacity: 12,000 BTU (1 ton)
- Northern Top-Up: An additional $3,000 for homes north of the District of 100 Mile House.
- Kelowna Top-Up: Up to $2,000 (now fully subscribed for new applicants).
- Two-Upgrade Bonus: Receive $300 for combining this upgrade with another eligible home renovation rebate.
- Connected Thermostat: Get $150 for installing an eligible connected thermostat.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the rebate, your home must meet these general requirements:
- Natural Gas or Propane Account: Your property must have an active FortisBC natural gas or propane account.
- Primary Residence: The home must be a year-round primary residence, at least 12 months old.
- Home Type: Single-family, duplex, triplex, row home, townhouse, or mobile home on a permanent foundation. New construction, additions, and garages are not eligible.
- Application Timeline: Submit your rebate application within six months of the paid invoice date.
- Cost Limit: Rebates cannot exceed the paid invoice cost.
Dual-Fuel System Specific Requirements
To be eligible, the system must meet these conditions:
- Invoice Date: Dated on or after July 1, 2024.
- Equipment: Must replace an existing gas furnace at least 10 years old.
- Installation: Completed by a Technical Safety BC licensed contractor who is a member of FortisBC’s Home Performance Contractor Network.
- System Specifications: Heat pump must have an AHRI-certified reference number linking the outdoor unit, indoor unit(s), and furnace model.


- Temperature Settings:
- Lower Mainland/Vancouver Island: ≤ 5°C switch-over.
- Southern Interior/Northern BC: ≤ 2°C switch-over.
- Commissioning: Must undergo commissioning to confirm proper operation.
- System Sizing: Sized to meet heat demand at the region-specific outdoor set-point. Equipment sized using the “rule of thumb” is not accepted.
- Thermostat: A connected thermostat must be installed simultaneously by the contractor.
How to Apply
- Purchase and Install: Install an eligible dual-fuel system through a licensed contractor.
- Submit Application: Complete and submit your rebate application within six months of the invoice date.
- Provide Documentation: Include the following:
- FortisBC account number
- Paid invoice (scanned copy)
- Heat load calculation and commissioning sheet
- Photos of the direct vent system (upon request)
